Salt Pump Climbing Company

Introducing Salt Pump Climbing Company, currently getting built from the ground up in Scarborough, Maine, and soon to become a favorite training escape for climbing, yoga and fitness.  Their building brings in a huge amount of natural light and backs up to a green space that lets the outside flow in.

"Many climbing gyms are in industrial parks, but we wanted a site that will give people a feeling similar to that of going to a cliff by situating it in a natural setting," says Salt Pump partner and CEO Taki Miyamoto.  "The fact that we have a setting like this so close to an urban area is something that makes Maine unique.  Our site, half mile from Exit 42 on I-95 is incredibly convenient for customers to get to us from anywhere in Maine..."

Salt Pump was founded by passionate New England climbers Taki Miyamoto, Mark Richey and Freddie Wilkinson. With many ascents of big walls, alpine climbs, and difficult rock routes around the world (among other notable climbs, Richey and Wilkinson won the 2012 Piolet d'Or), the three friends felt the Southern Maine region deserved a premium gym -- designed by climbers for climbers.
EP designer Grant Ortman worked along with the Salt Pump team to ensure the climbing walls took advantage of this concept and provided terrain route-setters will love as an inviting canvas.

"First and foremost, its a great product," Miyamoto says, explaining his choice of wall manufacturer. "We will be the first in the Northeast in recent times to select EP for walls.... We are excited to build a strong and long lasting relationship with EP."
The climbing areas will include over 11,000 sq.ft. of MozaiK surface with 55+ lead lines and 35+ bouldering lines.  Natural Freeform cracks have been included along with a giant arch and tower that will keep route-setters and climbers excited.  With a main goal to introduce and encompass all types of climbers, a few more features include:
  • World Cup style bouldering wall
  • 45 foot high lead wall
  • Beginner and Kids area
  • General fitness and systems training area
  • Large deck overhanging a freshwater pond
We are looking forward to watching this project come together.  We have quickly become fans of these guys and want them to be proud to share their facility as a flagship in the northeast for EP's climbing walls.
